Step 1
The Assessment
Your eyes will be thoroughly examined by your optometrist or at one of our Laser Sight during a consultation that usually takes about one hour. Taking into account the individuality of each of your eyes and your unique vision, the results show whether refractive surgery can benefit you, and which treatment option suits you best.
A detailed explanation of surgical risks will be given at that time, and you will have the opportunity to have all your questions answered.
If you choose to undertake refractive surgery we will schedule a convenient date for your treatment and provide a detailed explanation of what to expect. If you wear contact lenses, you need to stop wearing them prior to the treatment.
Step 2
The Day Of Your Treatment
It is quite natural that you will be both nervous and excited. After all, within a few hours from now, you’ll be enjoying a totally different outlook on life!
While you are at one of our Centres, our professional and friendly staff will care for you. For most treatments, you will be with us for about 2 hours.
Before Treatment
1/2 hour prior to the procedure you will be given the option to take a mild sedative orally to calm your nerves. The area around your eyes is prepared with antiseptic solution to minimise the risk of infection.
In lens implant surgeries a mild anaesthesia is required. This will be administered xx hrs prior to treatment. You will stay awake, but feel drowsy and relaxed.
The Treatment
Anaesthetic eye drops are placed in your eyes, and each step of the surgery is explained. You then proceed into the treatment room.
Each of our procedures takes no longer than 20-30 minutes for both eyes. The actual laser corneal reshaping process takes just 15 to 60 seconds per eye; CK treatment just 3 minutes per eye and lens implants slightly longer.
Immediately After Treatment
Some medicated drops will be administered and the post-operative care explained by one of our friendly nurses. We will place a clear eye shield over your eyes before you leave the clinic.
After Treatment
You are encouraged to go home and sleep for approximately 4 hours. We provide a sleeping tablet to assist you. You may experience some discomfort, such as a gritty sensation or watery eyes. This is a normal part of the healing process.
Mild analgesic medication such as Panadol will be provided and can be used if necessary.
Post-operative Restrictions
- No swimming for 2 weeks
- No eye make-up for 1 week
- No driving for 24 hours or until you feel comfortable
- No contact sports for 4 weeks
Step 3
Follow Up Care
Your post-operative care is just as important for your result as the procedure itself. Your day-one post-operative check will be performed at our clinic. Further follow up will be provided by your referring eye care practitioner, or here at Laser Sight.
